Artist's Statement
of Gail Frasier
My clay sculptures concern Nature and Change. It is change and growth, the possible effects of these over time, that interests me – pods on the verge of bursting with seeds; shells outgrown by their sea inhabitants; tree bark surviving animals and weather; weather affects on rocks; and, in a broader sense, the breakthrough moments of personal change and growth.
Now, after returning from two years in Peace Corps Jamaica, I am adding her influences. Such memories as the fascinating designs of nutmegs’ outer layers, the many and varied island flowers, coconuts and other fruit shapes are finding their way into my art. I am excited to be back in the studio and anxious to see how personal growth will influence my work too.
Growing up in Florida, Frasier spent many weekends on the beach collecting shells as well as skeletons of urchins, sand dollars and horse-shoe crabs. She has made her home in Colorado since 1974. The ocean of Florida and mountains of Colorado both inspire her work. She finds self-expression in clay's pliability, its ability to hold textures, and its durability. From 2007 to 2009 she and her husband served in U.S. Peace Corps Jamaica where they worked in community development. Jamaican influences such as flowers, nutmeg and coconuts are making themselves known in her new work. In 2006, Frasier’s work was featured in two invitational shows; four publications; and is included in Evergreen – Our Mountain Community, by Gene & Barbara Sternberg. In 1996, Frasier was instrumental in launching an Artist-in-Residence program at Wilmot Elementary School, Evergreen, CO. She has been an active member of Artists with Altitude, the Evergreen Artists’ Association, and sits on the board of Art for the Mountain Community. Her work is represented in The Stephen Quiller Gallery, Creede, Co. She will be part of Sculpture in the Park, Loveland, CO, Aug 6-8, as well as the Evergreen Open Door Studio Tour, Sept 18 & 19, Evergreen, CO. Frasier was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from the University of South Florida in 1968.
