Artist's Statement of Gail J. Frasier

My objective is to convey my respect for Nature and the omnipresence of Change.  A collection of cones, pods and seashells along with photos of trees, rocks and wood are my inspiration and guidance.

What makes my work unique is the layering effect, along with contrasts in textures.  The layers and textures can be seen as metaphors expressing seasonal changes as well as personal changes.  My clay vessels tell us they have grown beyond their older, smaller shell, exposing the fresh, emerging surface underneath.  The viewer is able to identify with the work as an expression of personal changes and growth.

Biography

Gail Frasier is a clay sculptor who makes one of a kind, medium to large scale pieces that remind the viewer of nature and natural changes. She grew up in central Florida and has always enjoyed being outside whether with her horse, on the ocean or now, in the mountains. While earning a degree in mathematics, she also took art classes such as drawing, design and ceramics.  In these classes Gail found a self-expression in clay's pliability, ability to hold textures, its 3 dimensionality and durability after firing.

Gail received her BA from the University of South Florida before moving to Colorado in 1974. "I feel I was meant to live in the mountains and develop my pottery goals here. I love the climate, the change of season, the people, and especially hiking, biking and camping in the mountains."

Frasier has shown her work in exhibitions throughout Colorado. Her work has been in the acclaimed Sculpture in the Park show, Loveland, Colorado, 2004 and 2006, and she has a piece in the Arts in Public Places program, Wellington, Florida. She was a featured artist in Shadow Mountain Gallery, Evergreen; has been in 2-person shows in Steamboat Springs, Longmont and Evergreen; was an invited artist in the annual Invitational show, Evergreen Arts Center's, 2004, 2005 and 2006; won the Janie O. Smith award in 2001 in the Northern Colorado Arts Association, National Show, Ft Collins and her body of work was awarded 2nd place in the 2004 Evergreen Fine Arts Festival.  Her clay vessels are represented in The Wild Side Gallery, Key West, Florida; The Standing Sun Gallery, Denver and Wildside Studio, Frisco, Colorado.

From 1976 until 2000, Gail made functional pottery on her kick wheel.  After 18 years of a successful functional pottery business, the artist felt an increasing pull toward expressing her love of Nature in sculptural forms.  In 1996, Frasier was instrumental in launching Arts Day and the Artist-in-Residence program at Wilmot Elementary School, Evergreen, CO.  She has been an active member of the Evergreen Artists’ Association since 1980.  Frasier was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1946.
